The IPA World Conference was in Glasgow, Scotland, in June 2023. During my stay, I visited six programs in Scotland and Italy. These include Child Woods, Baltic Street Adventure Playground, St Mirins After School Outdoor Classroom, Ft. Williams Outdoor Nursery, and a Reggio Inspired program in Florence, Italy. Each program approached outdoor space and nature differently, so many ideas and photos to share. Explore ideas for giving children space to play.

Do we really need screens in ECE? In this session, we challenge the notion that early educators must use digital technology such as apps in the classroom in order to be truly culturally responsive and child-led. With examples from the most popular apps, participants will better understand how digital play is shaped by corporations who are motivated by profit, not what’s best for children. Participants will come away with new knowledge and tools for advocacy toward a screen aware early childhood practice.

The Freedom to Free Play: Turkey's Leap into Playwork and Loose Parts Play

The 'Play for the Planet' project in Turkey, a collaborative effort by local authorities and a university, supports children's free play and promotes sustainability through play. Providing loose parts materials and playworker training, the initiative established a unique playground that encourages self-directed play. Despite initial challenges, it enhanced cultural understanding among children from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the universal language of play and the importance of environmental awareness through innovative, child-led activities.
